October on K’gari

Hello Everyone,

This post is about what my family has noticed on K’gari in October, we kept a sheet of paper that we wrote on each time we noticed something new.

This is what we noticed:

• Dingo whelping season – Dingo pups are coming out of their dens for the first time and learning how to hunt and testing dominance.
• Jelly fish are washing up on the beaches – there have been lots of jelly fish washing up on the beaches they vary in size and colour.
• Sea lice in the water – as a result of the jelly fish coming, the sea lice that like to live on them come too. Sea lice make you itchy after a swim but I don’t really mind.
• March flies and mosquitos are often around, making it hard to do things outside that involve siting down for a period of time.
• Shearwaters washing up – exhausted and mostly dead shearwaters wash up on the beaches on their way to Tasmania and southern Victoria to nest.
• Midgem berry season ending – midgem berrys are one of my favorite bush tucker. Although the season is ending there are thousands on the Lake Wabby walk!
• Paper daises are loosing their seeds – these lovely little flowers are loosing there seeds  at the moment and we are trying to grow some along our driveway.
• Lots of flowers are blooming – as well as the paper dasies there are lots of other flowers blooming 🙂
• Pig face are flowering and fruiting – another one of my favorite bush fruits, pig face are producing flowers and fruit, Yummmmy!
• Late whale season – our veranda is a great place for viewing things out at sea. One day we saw a whale when we were having breakfast.
• Soap bush is fruiting – this acacia is like the “soap bush” we were showed by an indigenous woman in Kakadu. It make suds when you use it like soap.
